Mother x Daughter Guide to Birmingham

We recently spoke at a mother x daughter event in Birmingham! It was a blast! In light of the event, we had a precious recent Samford grad help us write a blog post for “the best” of Birmingham!

My mom and I personally went to Taco Mama before the event-yum!

A Girly Day in Birmingham, AL

The Perfect Mother-Daughter or Best Friends Day during any time of the year!

Welcome to Birmingham, AL! Whether you are taking a pit stop on the way to Auburn or Tuscaloosa, visiting some beloved family members, or looking at Samford to spend the next four years, you won’t be disappointed with the fun that this city has to offer!

I am eager to give each of you ladies a glimpse into some of my top choices of this wonderful city I have been lucky enough to call home for a little while! If I can do nothing else, I can recommend some shopping and places to eat!

To start any special day with a special breakfast, head on over to Continental Bakery in English Village. While I am biased to a cherry almond scone and a vanilla latte, you cannot go wrong with anything that strikes a chord in that delicate glass window! From a vast array of cute cookies, to a cake for any celebration, or just a morning snack, this is the spot. This hidden gem is a local staple, and one that I love to take my friends and family to. It is the best pick-me-up to start a day in Birmingham!

While spending some time in English Village, you are best to knock out some of the best shopping in town while you finish your coffee! This neck of the woods has retail staples like Monkees, Bossi Leisure, & Le Weekend. Walkable, friendly, and quieter than you’d expect. It is such a good starting place for your everyday basics, or a special occasion dress.

With a great breakfast under your belt, it is time to head to Crestline village to pop into Smith’s Variety & the Pants Store. Smith’s, next to my most favorite piggly wiggly, is the best for prepping for any celebration. I love going here for balloons, party decor, or a little gift for a friend. You will easily find some fun game day hosting gear (for Auburn and Bama fans!), and the best smelling candles. If gifts are on your mind, maybe for a sweet friend graduating or a shower to celebrate a bride, Heezie’s is also in Crestline. Full of bright colors, unique inventory, and the most fun pieces. This is a must-stop on your fabulous day in Birmingham.

Lastly, for all our girls rushing so soon, or for the girls ready to recruit, the Pants Store is not just tik-tok famous, but has so many gems. Grab a bogg bag for the summertime, or a fun pair of game day earrings- you can’t go wrong with stopping in here! There are so many more cute stores in this area if you are bopping around quickly- you cannot go wrong.

Speaking of clothes, I got this romper from Clover + Bee (a Birmingham boutique)!

While I believe that you may have worked up an appetite from hitting the ground running shopping this morning, I have a plethora of lunch spot recommendations:

Crestline Bagel for the BEST bagel in bham!

Taco Mama- a staple in Alabama and the best tacos!

Olexa’s- the ultimate girl lunch of sandwiches, soups, salads, and iced tea.

Brick & Tin- 10/10. That is all.

After a great lunch, you may be ready for a little exercise! If the weather is great, you can never go wrong with a walk on Jemison Trail or the Lakeshore Trail. Maybe, for a little more activity, pickleball downtown sounds like fun?! Both are great, and they allow you to see the sights of Birmingham. If you need an afternoon pick me up at any point, you may love a tea at Birmingham Nutrition, a coffee from Cala, or an iced latte from seeds- all are fabulous!

Girly pickleball is ALWAYS fun!

Post exercise, let’s talk fun dinner out on the town…

After you get dolled up for dinner, it is time to walk through downtown Homewood to hit some of the best spots before heading to 2nd avenue. Start at the top at Effies, and make sure to hit Wrapsody, Cottage Basket, At Home, and Theadora (my personal favorite!). Along the way are many great stops and the best places to wrap up shopping in Birmingham. I always love small businesses the most!

Dinner on second avenue will get us downtown and into the lights of Birmingham to see City Federal and our beautiful skyline. You may even have a great view of the Vulcan, a special monument to the Magic City, if it is not too cloudy. My best suggestion for dinner is East West on second avenue, but if you can’t get in (because it is so well loved), then you cannot go wrong with any of the spots on this street. It is a landmine of great restaurants.

This is just a small glimpse into one of many ideal days you can have in Birmingham! There is so much to offer in this sweet city, and the community is unmatched! I have always loved the home-town feel with a plethora of local businesses, and how accessible it is from so many cities. I hope you enjoy your time in Birmingham, too!
